At best, The Nun is a thriller. Rating by expectation of a horror film, this movie gets two stars but by effects and film appreciation, let’s give it …

Verdict: 6 Stars

The anticipation level for the fifth installment of the famous The Conjuring series was undeniably high but with the comic motion picture viewers saw in theaters, we might as well stick to the trailer as it unfortunately was more scary

Review

The pre-prequel to The Conjuring opens to a nun hanging herself in order to stop the demon Valak (who’s the antagonist) from housing itself in her body.

Following the sin of suicide, the Vatican sends Father Burke (Demian Bichir) and Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), a young novitiate to Romania to investigate the death and return with answers.

From the opening scene, it’s understandable if your heart begins to pound especially as you’ll be introduced to Valak  or the Nun (Bonnie Aarons) almost as the movie begins. Sadly, the jumps don’t go too far in, as the reign of predictability begins. That coupled with Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet), a French-Canadian farmer who becomes the fountain of comic relief in the movie.

Now that we have reached comic relief, won’t you agree (to those who have watched) that it’s a little too ‘New School’ to have that much laughs as opposed to jumps in a horror film? It was great to laugh out loud but the reason horror lovers go to the theaters is not to be entertained by Mr. Bean but get that adrenaline rush!

Asides the large mismatched take of its genre, The Nun makes a shot for the skies with its effects, complex plot and truly fascinating story.

If you haven’t seen the previous installment, fear not! This movie feels like a stand-alone with just a little reference and a few minutes epilogue that shed light on previous releases.

At best, The Nun is a thriller!
